Our Story
A Tale of Craft and Passion
The Birth of
Niharika
In 1982 Kanpur, Reeta Mehra, a skilled knitter and homemaker, crafted sweaters for her sons. Her talent caught the attention of a local school principal, leading to uniform orders that transformed her home into a small workshop. By 1989, encouraged to expand, she opened a shop named after her granddaughter, Niharika.
What began as a loving hobby grew into a thriving business—built on care, quality, and family. Niharika became a legacy of Reeta’s craft and dedication, a tribute to tradition and the warmth of handmade garments.
Two years later, in 1984, during a casual tea meeting, fate intervened. Ms. Williams, the principal of Prabhat Public School, noticed the craftsmanship in the sweaters she had made. Impressed by her skill, Ms. Williams asked if she could knit sweaters for the 74 students at her small school. The housewife agreed, knitting each sweater by hand, and like magic, each one fit the children perfectly. This small gesture sparked something much bigger. Ms. Williams was so impressed with her work that she asked for summer uniforms next, confident that the magic of perfect fit would continue.
Threads of Legacy
The Story Behind Niharika
In the bustling city of Kanpur, India, in 1982, there lived a humble housewife with a heart full of warmth and a natural talent for knitting. Armed with a degree in BSc Home Science, she found joy in crafting sweaters for her two young sons, transforming simple yarn into beautiful, hand-knit garments. Her hands worked deftly, creating pieces that fit perfectly, not just in size but in love.
Word spread quickly. Soon, the principal of Mount Carmel School, her neighbor, sought her out to make uniforms for the students at his school as well. Orders began to flow into her modest home, which was fast becoming a workshop of creativity and precision.
In 1989, she crossed paths with Ms. Swaroop, a visionary who was preparing to open her own school. Once again, the housewife’s hands worked wonders, delivering a batch of perfectly fitting uniforms. Impressed by her consistency and dedication, Ms. Swaroop recognized the potential for something much greater. She suggested that the talented woman open her own shop.
Despite her humble beginnings, working from a small room in her house with a knitting machine she had received as a wedding gift, she was ready for this new chapter. But to open a shop, she needed a name. As fate would have it, her granddaughter had recently been born, and in that moment of new beginnings, she decided to name the shop after her: Niharika.
And so, from a small room filled with yarn and hope, a business was born. It wasn’t just about uniforms anymore—it was about creating garments with care, precision, and a touch of magic. What started as a simple favor to a few local schools turned into a thriving business, a legacy of craftsmanship that still lives on today, all because of one woman’s passion and her granddaughter’s name.
Niharika wasn’t just a shop—it was a tribute to the spirit of family, tradition, and the power of turning a hobby into a lifelong legacy.
And if you’re wondering who this remarkable woman is—her name is Reeta Mehra
Tracing the Journey, One Milestone at a Time
A Legacy in the Making
The First Step
In a humble room, Niharika began its journey with an order of 74 uniforms for a small school. This modest start laid the groundwork for the brand’s future.
A Vision Takes Shape
The spark of inspiration came when Mrs. Swaroop, a visionary acquaintance, introduced the concept that would define Niharika. Her idea marked the beginning of a transformative path.
The Birth of Niharika
One year later, the idea became a reality with the formal establishment of Niharika. That same year, the brand secured its first major order from a prestigious institution, marking its entrance into the educational uniform industry.
Stepping into the National Spotlight
Recognition followed when Niharika was featured in an interview with the Times of India. This national acknowledgment signified a turning point, bringing Niharika into the spotlight.
Securing Government Trust
Niharika’s ability to deliver on a grand scale was proven with its first government order. In just five months, over 350,000 uniforms were produced, demonstrating unparalleled efficiency and commitment.

The Journey of Resilience and Growth Behind Niharika
Rising Through Challenges
Our journey has been one of resilience. Each hurdle pushed us to grow stronger and remain true to our values. Here’s how we overcame the obstacles that defined Niharika’s path.
Early Days and Competition
In the beginning, when we were making uniforms in a small room at home, we encountered a challenge from a copycat brand named "Knockout," which opened right next to us, stealing our customers by misusing our name. This obstacle pushed us to take a bold step—we rented a proper space and formally established Niharika, laying the foundation for our brand’s true identity.
Convincing Family and Taking Risks
Renting the shop came with its own struggles. The monthly rent of ₹8,000 was a significant financial risk, and convincing my husband wasn’t easy, as he was unsure about the idea of taking such risks and me stepping away from home duties. However, through sheer willpower and determination, I pushed forward, believing in the potential of Niharika. This decision became a turning point in our journey.
The Betrayal of 2020
In 2020, we faced a major financial blow when a middleman, whom we had trusted, ran off with ₹35 lakhs. This betrayal could have crippled us, but we refused to give up. To cover the losses, we had to sell our gold and fought hard to regain our prestige and trust. This chapter in our journey strengthened our resolve to succeed, no matter the odds.
The Factory Fire of 2021
Tragedy struck again in 2021 when a fire engulfed our factory, causing damage worth over ₹5 crores. Machines, goods, and infrastructure were lost in the flames. Yet, despite the overwhelming devastation, we didn’t settle for defeat. With relentless dedication and the grace of God, we rebuilt and emerged stronger, ready to continue our mission.
Facing Copycats Again in 2022
In 2022, another imitator, under the name "Perfect," emerged, trying to replicate our designs and mirror our success. However, they soon realized that copying our work was not enough. Our efficiency, innovation, and promise to deliver quality made us stand far ahead of any competitor, proving that true excellence cannot be imitated.
